Accentus Medical Brings Silver Antimicrobial Surface Treatments to Complex 3D-Printed Porous Implants Structures

Accentus Medical, a leading developer of advanced surface modifications and coating technologies for implantable medical devices, is pleased to announce a funding award of £96,434 from Innovate UK, the UK’s innovation agency. The project is driven by recent market trend towards more complex device materials, such as 3-D porous structures formed by e.g. additive layer manufacturing techniques.

With the good clinical performance already demonstrated by Agluna® silver ion based surface in reducing the incidence and severity of post-operative infections with conventional titanium device substrates, Accentus Medical is now addressing evolving market demand for a novel silver-based antimicrobial surface treatment applied to more complex 3-D surfaces.

With funding support from Innovate UK’s Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund (Surface Engineering for High-Value Manufacturing), the project developed and evaluated novel silver based anti-microbial surface treatments, in combination with electrochemically deposited calcium phosphate (brushite) coating, demonstrating the basic safety and efficacy characteristics required of this innovative surface technology.

This project advances Accentus Medical toward commercialisation of our proprietary technologies in the orthopaedic market, where complex 3D structures are seeing increasing use in implantable devices.
